Heute, hier, in diesem unserem Lande? Ohne Religion, ohne Weltanschauung, ohne Ideale, kein Problem, aber ohne Handy?!!

Jep, ganz meine Ansicht.

We spent another hour or so at the Peacedale Public Library, looking at a yearbook from 1978, but lord, it depresses me, being in that fine, old building that’s giving up on books and slowly morphing into nothing more than row after row of computer monitors. If this is what struggling libraries have to do to stay relevant and keep their doors open, I say […] they’re better off shuttered.

As a lifelong liberal, I never imagined I’d see the emergence of something that can very accurately be called „liberal intolerance“ doing so much damage on college campuses. When I was in college (1983-1991), we fought conservatives and religious fundamentalists for unrestricted free speech and access to all art and literature, not just that which we agreed with and didn’t find offensive or disturbing.

My husband is fascinated, intrigued, yet still somewhat bemused by the fairer sex. He’s discovered a plethora of feminine dynamics in the years we’ve been married that he admits he’ll never fully understand. […]
Perhaps none more than this: the compliments one woman is allowed to give another.
He heard me telling a girlfriend not long ago that the skirt she was wearing really accentuated her pretty legs. He heard me tell another that her hair was “just lovely” in that color and style. He’s seen other women come up to me, expressing gratitude for a particular personality trait or just to tell me that the blouse I was wearing was really cute.
And for the life of him, he doesn’t see how this works. Men just don’t do this, he tells me. Never, for example, will I ever catch him praising another guy’s hair, or telling a friend how that button-up really brings out the broadness in his shoulders.

Mal so gesagt

In the intervening twenty years, the world has been changed by the web in ways that I only begin dimly to comprehend.
But I
do see that the world is not a better place for it. It isn’t a smarter world. It certainly isn’t a smarter America; quite exactly the opposite. We are not better people. We are not more humane. We’re just busier, more distracted, less focused people, buried in (almost) infinitely more white noise than humans had to cope with two decades ago. Most days, it seems that the internet spreads ignorance and hate more rapidly than it spreads anything else.

When I was in college, it was the Eagle Forum, the Moral Majority, and creationists who were trying to destroy higher education. Now, it’s people who probably think of themselves as liberal and progressive. Because, you know, you go far enough to the Left, and you’re on the Right (and vice versa).

Mal so gesagt

I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do because I notice it always coincides with their own desires.
